The Top 7 Tips to a Clean Pool

Maintaining a healthy and clean pool is not only a good way to ensure it is always ready for use, but it can also prevent costs further down the track. Though all pools are different, the key to a clean pool is simply regular and routine care. Even if you have your pool professionally cleaned, there are still some things you can do on your own to ensure your pool stays in excellent condition. Here are seven tips on how to maintain a healthy and clean pool:

1. Check your pool’s chemical levels
Two-three times per week in summer and once a week in winter. The pH level should be maintained at between 7.2 – 7.8. Purchase a testing kit to help you monitor the chemical levels.

2. Clean out skimmer basket(s) and debris
Weekly or as required depending on varying conditions. Clean out the hair and lint pot in the pump every two weeks or as needed. Turn off the pump to do this. Skim your pool’s surface by hand every few days to easily maintain a clean pool. Floating debris eventually sinks, making it harder to remove. Skimming regularly and cleaning out skimmer baskets will also increase the efficiency of your pool’s circulation system and will lower the amount of chlorine you need to add to your pool.

3. Monitor the water level once a month and adjust as required. The water level should not fall below the level of the skimmer, otherwise pump damage can occur. Use a garden hose to refill your pool to a safe level.

4. Clean filters - You may need to do this after a heavy storm or once every few months depending on your pool’s conditions. Generally, you should clean your filters every 4-6 months, though this varies based on how much you use your pool. Signs of dirty filters can include the in-floor cleaning system not working well, an increase in flow between the pressure gauge and flow meter, or poor water clarity. Do not clean the filters more often than recommended as this can hinder the filtration process. A filter with a small amount of dirt in it will help trap other particles and remove debris from water.

5. Clean pool tile line - Weekly to reduce algae build-up and calcium deposits so they don’t fester and become big problems. Select your cleaning equipment as appropriate to the material of your pool walls. A stiff brush can be used on plaster-lined concrete, a soft brush for vinyl, fibreglass and tiles.

6. Vacuum your pool - Once weekly to keep water clear. This will reduce the number of chemicals you need to add to it.

7. Keep the area around your pool clear of vegetation, animals and chemicals. Waste by-products of these can feed algae in your pool.
Through regular, routine care you will maintain a healthy and clean pool until it is time for a professional service. For more information about how to maintain your pool, or to make use of our pool cleaning and chemical balancing
